Mmeri Ọnwụ

"Mmeri Ọnwụ" (Victory Over Death) is a vibrant Easter anthem that captures the sheer joy of the Resurrection. Composed by Charles Onwubuya, the piece announces the central truth of the season: King Jesus has risen from the dead, conquering the grave. From the opening full-choir declaration that we will carry our "Alleluia" because of the great things God has done, the song builds into a lively, rhythmic celebration of the risen Messiah.

The arrangement makes excellent use of call-and-response, alternating between male and female cantors, a quartet, and the full choir. The cantors narrate the Easter morning triumph—how the angels rolled away the great stone, and how the powers of heaven defeated the enemy—while the choir responds with resounding Alleluias and calls to rejoice. It is a fantastic choice for Easter Sunday Mass, especially during the Offertory or as a recessional, where its energetic tempo and triumphant message can truly lift the congregation's spirits. Because of its powerful theme of Christ's victory over the grave, it also serves as a deeply comforting and triumphant piece for Christian burials.
