SANCTUS IN YORUBA by J. Omeh — Lyrics
About SANCTUS IN YORUBA
When the Eucharistic Prayer reaches its great acclamation, choirs across Nigeria often turn to this vibrant Yoruba setting of the Sanctus. "Mímọ́ mímọ́ l'Oluwa" translates the familiar "Holy, Holy, Holy Lord" into a deeply rhythmic and joyful expression of reverence. The melody carries a natural sway, inviting the entire congregation to join in praising the Lord of hosts.
The arrangement is built for celebration. As the voices declare "Eledumare mímọ́" (God Almighty, holy) and "Atofarati mímọ́" (Our dependable rock), the music builds a sense of awe that feels both majestic and grounded in local culture. The score itself encourages the use of traditional Yoruba rhythmic instruments, which bring the syncopated solfa lines to life in the choir loft.
Singing "Hosanna l'oke ọrun" (Hosanna in the highest), the choir lifts the liturgy into a moment of pure, energetic worship. It is a wonderful example of how indigenous languages and rhythms transform the fixed parts of the Mass into something that resonates deeply with the people in the pews.
