In the Nigerian church, choirs bring this piece out for moments of high celebration involving the clergy—most notably during priestly ordinations, anniversaries of ordination, or the solemn reception of a bishop into a parish. The opening refrain immediately sets a tone of reverence, calling the congregation to recognize the dignity of the priesthood and the faithful servant who pleases God in his leadership.

The verses draw directly from the scriptural praise of the high priest in the Book of Sirach, singing of one who kept the laws of the Most High and to whom the Lord swore an oath to make his glory everlasting.
