About Jesus quem quæritis

The words of this motet, Jesus quem quæritis, are drawn from the Gospel account of the Resurrection. They speak of the empty tomb and the disciples' remembrance of Jesus' prophecy of his return. The text is sung in Latin and rendered for a large choir of six voices (SSATTB), allowing for rich harmonic textures and dramatic contrast. Claudio Merulo, a significant composer of the late Renaissance, likely crafted this sacred motet for liturgical use. Its polyphonic lines and the exultant alleluja at the close create a powerful musical setting of this pivotal Easter narrative.
