Otito Diri Chineke

"Otito Diri Chineke" is a vibrant and rhythmic setting of the Gloria, composed by Ifeanyi Nwaiwu using the new Igbo translation of the Mass. From the very first notes of the refrain, the piece captures the profound joy of the angelic hymn, calling the congregation to lift their voices in praise. The opening lines, "Ọtịto dịrị Chineke n'elu kachasị e" (Glory to God in the highest), set a celebratory tone that carries through the entire arrangement.

In the choir loft, this piece shines during festive Masses and Sunday liturgies. The composer skillfully divides the verses, allowing different voice parts to lead the prayer at various moments. The Soprano and Alto lines beautifully carry the petitions ("Ị na-ewepụ njọ nke ụwa meere anyị ebere"), creating a moment of earnest supplication before building back up to the triumphant final praises of the Holy Trinity.

Singers and congregations alike are moved by the natural flow of the Igbo language within the melody. It is a true song of worship that moves seamlessly from exuberant thanksgiving to humble petition, ending with a resounding, four-fold "Amen" that leaves the church echoing with praise.
