Im Herbst by Carl Maria von Weber — Lyrics
1. Feldeinwärts flog ein Vögelein
und sang im hellen Sonnenschein
mit süßem, wunderbarem Ton:
Ade, ich fliege nun davon,
weit, weit, weit, weit,
weit, weit reis' ich noch heut,
weit, weit, weit, weit!
2. Ich horchte auf den Feldgesang,
mir ward so wohl und doch so bang;
mit frohem Schmerz, mit süßer Lust
stieg wechselnd bald und sank die Brust,
Mein Herz, brichst du
vor Wonne oder Schmerz,
mein Herz, mein Herz?

About Im Herbst
A small bird flies into the field, singing a sweet, wonderful song: 'Farewell, I fly away now, far, far away today.' The narrator listens to the song, feeling a mix of joy and melancholy, their heart rising and falling with a sweet pain. As they see the leaves falling, they realize autumn has arrived. The summer guest, the swallow, departs, and perhaps love and longing fly away too, swiftly with time. Carl Maria von Weber's Im Herbst is a German secular part-song for SSA voices, capturing the fleeting beauty of the season and the bittersweet emotions it evokes.
