Ijewo Igbagbo {Creed in Yoruba}

"Ijewo Igbagbo" is a stirring Yoruba setting of the Nicene Creed, the great profession of faith we sing after the homily at Mass. Rather than a straight, through-composed chant, this arrangement anchors the congregation with a firm, recurring chorus: "Mo gba Ọlọrun kan ṣoṣo gbọ" (I believe in one God). This structure allows the choir to lead the detailed articles of faith in the verses while giving everyone a familiar, unifying refrain to return to.

The verses themselves are set to be chanted in unison by the sopranos and altos, moving briskly through the mysteries of creation, the incarnation, and the resurrection. It is a practical and deeply reverent piece for the choir loft, keeping the text clear and intelligible so that the whole church can reflect on the core truths of the faith together. The piece concludes with a layered, overlapping "Amin" in the coda, bringing the profession to a resolute close.
