Hortus conclusus

Rodrigo de Ceballos was a prolific Spanish composer of the late Renaissance. His motet Hortus conclusus is a beautiful example of sacred polyphony from this era. Written for SATB and SATT choir, this piece is sung in Latin. The text, drawn from the Song of Songs, describes the beloved in glowing terms: 'What is your beloved more than another beloved, O fairest among women?' The response is equally fervent: 'My beloved is white and ruddy, chosen out of thousands.' The motet captures this intimate dialogue with rich harmonies and expressive melodic lines, making it a compelling choice for services or concerts.
