About Hodie salvator mundi natus est
This joyful motet from the Renaissance celebrates the birth of Christ. The Latin text opens with the exultant cry, 'Today the Saviour of the world is born! Come, let us adore him!' It then describes the newborn Emmanuel, 'God the Mighty, Prince of Peace', and announces that the heavens should rejoice and the earth exult, for the Saviour is born of the Virgin Mary. The text also includes the angelic announcement to the shepherds of 'great joy' and the shepherds' response, recounting the vision of the infant wrapped in swaddling clothes, accompanied by choirs of angels praising the Saviour. Composed for four voices (ATTB), this setting would have been a vibrant part of sacred music in its time.
