About Herr Gott, dich loben wir
This monumental setting of the Te Deum laudamus is by Michael Praetorius. The Latin text, a hymn of praise and thanksgiving dating back to the early church, is sung here in a German translation by Martin Luther. The motet is scored for triple SATB choir, offering rich possibilities for antiphonal effects and dense choral textures. Praetorius was a master of polychoral composition, and this work showcases his ability to create grand, sonorous sonorities by dividing his forces. The text begins with a declaration of praise to God, invoking angels and apostles, prophets and martyrs, before moving to a more personal confession of faith in Christ as King of Glory.
