God be in my head

Jennifer Bastable sets this ancient English prayer for STB choir. The music opens with a gentle, flowing texture, the voices weaving together in careful imitation. The composer’s setting emphasizes the intimate and personal nature of the text, with each phrase of the prayer finding a clear and expressive musical shape. The predominantly homophonic writing allows the devotional words to be heard with clarity, while moments of contrapuntal interest add depth. This is a tender and reflective anthem, suitable for services seeking a moment of quiet contemplation. The setting is devout and accessible, offering a beautiful way to share this profound petition.
