About Gli amanti falliti
This is a powerful SSATB motet from the Baroque era, sung in Italian. Barbara Strozzi sets a text that is a plea to Love (Amor) from jilted lovers, lamenting their lost youth and beauty. They beg Love to cease his attacks, arguing that striking down those already weakened by age and misfortune would bring no glory to his name. The music would suit a moment of intense human drama within a sacred context, perhaps for a reflection on the trials of life and the need for divine mercy, or as part of a service exploring themes of love and suffering.
