Factum est autem in illis diebus, exiit edictum
a Cæsare Augusto, ut describeretur universus orbis.

Et ibant omnes ut profiterentur singuli in suam civitatem.
Ascendit autem et Joseph a Galilea, de civitate Nazareth,
in Judæam, civitatem David, quæ vocatur Bethlehem,

About Factum est autem in illis diebus
Balthasar Resinarius was a composer of sacred music in the German tradition. This motet uses a Latin text, derived from the opening verses of the Gospel of Luke, which describes the events surrounding the birth of Jesus. It begins with the imperial decree for a census and Joseph's journey to Bethlehem, before moving to the Nativity itself, mentioning the swaddling clothes and the manger. The text also includes the appearance of shepherds keeping watch over their flocks by night. Resinarius sets this narrative for two choirs, SATB and STTB, creating a rich polyphonic texture appropriate for liturgical settings.
