Exsurge Domine by John Wood — Lyrics

About Exsurge Domine

John Wood composed this sacred motet for SATBB or SATBarB voices in Latin. The text is a powerful plea for divine intervention, asking God to rise up and scatter enemies, while celebrating the righteous disciples of Christ. It calls for joyous singing and exaltation of God's magnificence and majesty. The prayer continues, asking for Christ's heavenly kingdom to expand among the chosen, and for God to be a father to the people, a protector of the vulnerable, and a comfort to those suffering persecution or in need. It concludes with a desire to dwell in God's house in peace and unity, sharing the same heart, mind, and understanding of God's word.
