About Exaudi Deus a 7 (II)
The text of this motet is a prayer for divine protection from enemies and the troubles of sin. The composer sets this plea for deliverance in Latin, creating a rich sound world for a large seven-part choir (SSATTBB). Christoph Straus’s setting explores the dramatic text with powerful harmonic language and imitative writing, building to moments of intense supplication. This is a deeply expressive sacred work, suitable for a choir seeking to explore the complex contrapuntal traditions of the early Baroque.
