Estote prudentes

Matthieu Le Maistre’s Estote prudentes is a sacred motet for SATB choir. The music opens with a flowing, imitative texture, the voices entering one by one in a clear, sonorous manner. The Latin text, drawn from Matthew 10:16, is brought to life by the composer’s skilful writing, with the contrasting images of serpent and dove depicted through shifts in mood and musical character. The homophonic writing for the opening phrase gives way to a more complex polyphony as the motet unfolds.
