The SATB voices weave together to create a rich sound, mirroring the unfolding beauty of the text. The lyrics, drawn from a 16th-century collection and later adapted by Praetorius, speak of a rose that has sprung from a tender root, a symbol of Jesse's line that brings forth a bloom in the depth of winter. This imagery points to the Virgin Mary, who, by God's eternal counsel, bore a child and remained a pure maiden, a miraculous birth announced in the stillness of the night.
