Hugo Distler’s setting of Es ist ein Ros entsprungen opens with a gentle, imitative texture in the upper voices, quickly building to rich, homophonic chords. The SATB choir is treated with sensitivity, creating a warm and resonant sound. The German text, a well-known Advent carol, speaks of a rose that has sprung from a tender root, a symbol of Mary and the birth of Christ.
