About Era l'anima mia
Annibale Gregori's Era l'anima mia is a secular madrigal for SSATB voices, written in Italian. The text describes a soul on the brink of death, languishing as it faces its end. However, the gaze of a beloved, described as the most beautiful and pleasing soul, turns to the dying one with such pity that it brings them back to life. The beloved's eyes seem to ask why the soul is consumed, asserting that their own heart, from which they draw breath, is not as dear as the soul. If the soul dies, then the beloved will die too. This polyphonic setting captures the dramatic emotional arc of the poem, moving from despair to a powerful declaration of love and shared fate.
