About Era l'anima mia
Alfonso Fontanelli was a significant figure in the development of the Italian madrigal. Era l'anima mia, for SATTB voices, is a fine example of this secular Renaissance genre. The text describes a soul close to death, languishing as if dying. However, the gaze of a beautiful and dear soul intervenes, bringing the dying person back to life. The beloved's eyes seem to ask why the soul is wasting away, proclaiming their heart is not as dear as the soul's own. The dying person replies that if the beloved dies, they too will die.
