Guillaume Le Heurteur's motet Ego flos campi - Ego mater pulchrae dilectionis for SATB voices sets a Latin text drawn from the Song of Songs, rich with imagery of flowers and gardens. The music opens with the sopranos and altos presenting the 'flower of the field' motif, soon joined by the tenors and basses to create a full, resonant texture. Le Heurteur skillfully weaves the distinct textual sections, moving from the tender comparison of the beloved to a lily amongst thorns to the intimate welcome into the 'king's wine cellar' and the longing expressed with pleas for flowers and apples. The motet concludes with the evocative description of the enclosed garden, a fountain sealed, and a well of living waters, a musical portrayal of purity and spiritual abundance.
