About Ego flos campi
Floriano Canale's Ego flos campi is a sacred motet for SSAATB voices setting a Latin text drawn from the Song of Songs. The composer paints vivid images of the beloved, comparing herself to a flower in the field and lily of the valleys, and her love to an apple tree. The text moves from the beloved's desire for her lover's shade and the sweetness of his fruit, to a royal invitation to a wine cellar where love has been arranged. The second part of the text shifts to the image of a 'walled garden, a sealed fountain,' a source of living waters flowing from Lebanon, evoking purity and secluded beauty. This rich imagery is conveyed through the lush harmonies and expressive lines typical of Renaissance motets.
