About Dum transisset Sabbatum

This motet by Christian Erbach sets the biblical account of the women coming to the tomb on Easter morning. The Latin text, opening with the women approaching after the Sabbath, describes their purchase of spices to anoint Jesus. As the sun rises on the first day of the week, they arrive at the monument, finding it empty. The music is scored for SATB choir, offering rich harmonic possibilities to portray the solemnity and dawning hope of the Easter narrative. Erbach’s setting would have been at home in the sacred music traditions of the late Renaissance or early Baroque.
