Dulce nomen Jesu by Orazio Tarditi — Lyrics

Dulce nomen Jesu, dulcissima dulcedo, o vera salus, o vera vita, o spes unica animae mea, o bone Jesu, te adoro creator et redemptor meus, te humiliter deprecor, o reverenter exoro: parce peccatis a voluptatibus seculi et munda corda nostra a voluptatibus seculi.

About Dulce nomen Jesu

Orazio Tarditi’s motet Dulce nomen Jesu opens with a flowing melodic line presented in imitative entries, creating a rich contrapuntal texture. The four voices (SSAB) are woven together with a delicate yet compelling interplay. The Latin text is a fervent address to Jesus, extolling His sweetness and unique power as saviour and life for the soul. It expresses deep devotion and a plea for mercy, asking for sins to be pardled and hearts to be cleansed. The music rises to moments of passionate adoration, culminating in a humble prayer that the composer, who created humanity from nothing, will not allow the singer to be condemned.
