Domine non secundum peccata nostra

This motet expresses a profound plea for divine mercy, moving from an acknowledgement of sin to an urgent appeal for God’s help and forgiveness. The text prays that God will not judge us according to our sins or iniquities, and that His mercies will be swift, especially in our poverty. It beseeches God to aid us for the glory of His name and to be gracious for His own sake. Jacques Arcadelt’s setting for SATTB voices is a powerful rendition of this penitential prayer.
