About Dixit Dominus I (1650)
Claudio Monteverdi's Dixit Dominus, dating from around 1650, is a powerful setting of Psalm 109. Written for double choir (SATB.SATB), the work unfolds with grand, antiphonal exchanges that create a rich sonic landscape. The Latin text, from a Messianic psalm, speaks of God's mighty power, the exaltation of a king, and his eternal priesthood. Monteverdi’s masterful use of contrasting forces and dramatic vocal writing vividly portrays the psalm’s majestic and triumphal message. The interplay between the two choirs builds to moments of great intensity, reflecting the text's assertion of divine authority and everlasting dominion.
