About Dixerunt impii
Cornelius Canis was a composer of the Franco-Flemish school. His motet Dixerunt impii is a powerful setting of a Latin text drawn from the Book of Wisdom, depicting the wicked plotting against the just man. The text describes their plan to ensnare and condemn him, questioning his claims of divine knowledge and sonship. They resolve to test his patience and condemn him to a shameful death, asserting that if he is truly the Son of God, he will be delivered from his enemies. This arresting motet is written for SATTB choir, offering rich harmonic possibilities for the expressive text.
