About Dies sanctificatus
This sacred motet by Costanzo Porta, for TTTB voices, sets a Latin text for Christmas. Its title, 'Dies sanctificatus', refers to the 'holy day' that has dawned upon us, inviting all nations to adore the Lord. The lyrics proclaim that on this day a great light has descended upon the earth, followed by the exultant cry of 'Alleluia'. The composer then turns to the Psalm verse, "Haec dies quam fecit Dominus" ('This is the day the Lord has made'), urging singers and listeners alike to rejoice and be glad in it. Porta's setting would be highly appropriate for a Christmas celebration, drawing on the solemnity and joy of the season.
