Conceptio tua

The conception of the Virgin Mother of God brought joy to the whole world. For from you, Christ our God, the sun of justice, has arisen. He has broken the curse and bestowed blessing, confounded death and granted life everlasting. Nicolas Gombert’s motet sets this text for an ample choir of five voices: soprano, tenor, tenor, bass, and bass. Written for unaccompanied voices, it is a prime example of sacred polyphony from the High Renaissance, requiring skilled singers to navigate its intricate lines and rich harmonies.
