About Come ti vedo
Giovanni Animuccia's Come ti vedo depicts Christ's suffering on the cross, as if seen by the viewer. The text, a poignant Italian lament, expresses the agony of the crucified Christ, betrayed by friends and pierced by nails. It speaks of his sacrifice not for earthly kingdoms but for the beloved human soul. This sacred motet is set for SAT voices, offering a deeply emotional reflection on Christ's Passion. The music would have been used in Counter-Reformation Rome, where Animuccia was a significant figure at the Oratory of Saint Philip Neri, known for his expressive and devotional style.
