About Come Holy Ghost
Orlando Gibbons's sacred motet Come Holy Ghost is a setting of the familiar Veni Creator Spiritus hymn, an ancient Latin text invoking the Holy Spirit. The composer also provides an English translation, making it suitable for services where either language is preferred. The SATB choir will find much to admire in this work, which calls upon the Spirit for divine grace, inspiration, and protection. The text explores the multifaceted nature of the Paraclete, asking for divine light to fill the senses, love to infuse the heart, and strength to fortify the body. It also pleads for the expulsion of evil and the bestowal of peace. The motet concludes with a doxology praising the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
