Cognoscimus Domine by Thomas Crecquillon — Lyrics

Cognoscimus Domine quia peccavimus, veniam petimus quam non meremur. Manum tuam porrige lapsis qui latroni confitenti paradisi januam aperuisti.

About Cognoscimus Domine

Thomas Crecquillon's Cognoscimus Domine is a sacred motet for four voices (STTB). The music opens with a plaintive sigh, the tenor and alto voices weaving a contrapuntal texture that soon broadens to embrace the full choir. The text, in Latin, is a prayer for mercy and pardon. It acknowledges sin and begs for forgiveness, not on the basis of merit, but through God's boundless compassion, recalling the story of the repentant thief. The voices move with a flowing lyricism that perfectly captures the penitential yet hopeful mood of the words, building to moments of earnest supplication before returning to quiet introspection.
