Coecus quidam sedebat secus viam mendicans. Et cum audiret turbam praetereuntem, interrogabat quid hoc esset. Dixerunt autem illi quod Iesus Nazarenus transiret, et clamavit, dicens: Iesu, miserere mei, Fili David! Et qui praeibant, increpabant eum, ut taceret. Ipse vero multo magis clamabat: Miserere mei, Fili David! Stans autem Iesus iussit illum duci ad se, et cum adpropinquasset, interrogavit illum, dicens: Quid tibi vis faciam? At ille dixit: Domine ut visum recipiam. Et Iesus dixit illi: recipito visum, fides tua te salvum reddidit.
About Coecus quidam
This setting of a Latin text by Melchior Vulpius depicts the encounter between Jesus and the blind beggar Bartimaeus. The narrative, drawn from the Gospels, describes the beggar's persistent cries for mercy and his eventual healing. The motet is written for a large choir, divided into SSAT and ATTB sections, creating a rich and layered sound ideal for a liturgical setting during Lent or Holy Week, or as a contemplative piece at any time of year. Vulpius's expressive setting would allow a choir to convey the drama of the text and the power of faith through a substantial, multi-choir texture.
