Circumdederunt me by Philippe de Monte — Lyrics

Alleluja. Dilexi, quoniam exaudiet Dominus vocem orationis meae. Quia inclinavit aurem suam mihi, et in diebus meis invocabo. Circumdederunt me dolores mortis; et pericula inferni invenerunt me. Tribulationem et dolorem inveni, et nomen Domini invocavi: o Domine, libera animam meam. Misericors Dominus et justus, et Deus noster miseretur. Custodiens parvulos Dominus; humiliatus sum, et liberavit me. Convertere, anima mea, in requiem tuam, quia Dominus benefecit tibi: quia eripuit animam meam de morte, oculos meos a lacrimis, pedes meos a lapsu. Placebo Domino in regione vivorum.

About Circumdederunt me

Philippe de Monte's motet Circumdederunt me, for SATTB voices, sets a Latin text drawn from the Psalms and Lamentations. The words speak of the composer's deep personal suffering, surrounded by the pains of death and the perils of hell. Yet, through invoking the Lord's name, he finds deliverance and proclaims the mercy and justice of God. The text moves from anguish to a profound expression of faith and gratitude for salvation, ending with a promise to offer praise in the land of the living. This moving devotional piece calls for sensitive interpretation from the choir, capturing the dramatic emotional arc of the text.
