ABU UMU ZAYON

"Abu Umu Zayon" (Psalmody of the Children of Zion) is a vibrant, multi-sectioned Igbo anthem composed by Charles I. Onwubuya. Written specifically for the Advent Congress of the Archdiocese of Ibadan in 2016, the piece carries the joyful anticipation and grand scale expected of a major diocesan gathering.

The anthem opens with a powerful unison declaration of God as a mighty warrior ("Chukwu dike n'agha"), setting an immediate tone of triumph and awe. As the music unfolds, it invites the choir and congregation to journey to Zion ("K'anyi je nu Zayon"), blending high praise with a deep sense of spiritual pilgrimage.

For a choir, this score offers a thrilling and demanding workout. It moves through dynamic shifts—from the driving, rhythmic male chorus ("Kwango! kwango!") to a lyrical alto or mezzo-soprano solo that beautifully ties the heavenly Zion to the earthly nation ("Zayon anyi bu Naijiria").
