Abu Umu Zayon

"Abụ Ụmụ Zayọn" (Song of the Children of Zion) is a vibrant, rhythmic Igbo choral piece that celebrates the journey to the heavenly city. Opening with a powerful unison section, the choir declares God as the mighty warrior ("Chukwu dike n'agha") who deserves all praise and exaltation. The melody then breaks into a joyful, marching call to head to Zion, the beautiful city, accompanied by the victorious songs of heavenly angels.

The arrangement features dynamic shifts, moving from full choir to an expressive alto or mezzo-soprano solo that brings the message closer to home. In a moving passage, the soloist prays for Nigeria, calling it our own Zion—a good land anointed by God—and urges the people to praise the Father because the nation is healing. This is followed by a robust male chorus announcing the arrival of the mighty King ("Odogw'eze abata go").

Originally composed for an Advent Congress, the piece builds toward a heartfelt solo prayer asking the heavenly Father to open the doors of heaven and let its rain fall upon the people. It closes simply and reverently with a prayer in the name of Jesus. Choirs will find this an uplifting choice for Advent, festive celebrations, or any moment of national prayer, offering the congregation a message of hope, victory, and divine blessing.
