ỌKAKA by Victor C. Odum — Lyrics
About ỌKAKA
This lively Igbo thanksgiving song bursts with gratitude and praise, built around the title "Ọkaka" (The Greatest/Almighty). It opens with a free, ad-lib soprano solo calling out to the Almighty God, before launching into a vibrant, fast-paced "Vivace" section where the full choir declares their readiness to bring beautiful gifts and give God the glory He deserves.
The piece is structured with distinct solo sections set against a rhythmic choir ostinato (a repeated background pattern). A baritone solo leads the first major section, urging everyone to praise Christ who died so that we might have life in abundance. This is followed by a soaring soprano solo that praises God as the defender of the widow and the mighty warrior ("Ebube dike").
With its driving tempo, call-and-response structure, and focus on bringing good gifts to the Lord, this song is an excellent choice for the Offertory procession. The continuous "Ise" (Amen) at the end seals the choir's joyful offering of praise.
