CHINEKE, ODOGWU! by Jude Nnam — Lyrics
About CHINEKE, ODOGWU!
"CHINEKE, ODOGWU!" is an expansive, through-composed Igbo choral anthem of praise and thanksgiving. Written by Jude Nnam for a 1999 liturgical music competition in Abuja, the piece is a grand celebration of God's majesty, power, and creation. The title points to God as the mighty warrior, the supreme creator who commands the heavens and the earth.
The lyrics call on all nations, the sun, moon, stars, and all living creatures to praise the Almighty. The music moves through highly dynamic sections, starting with a reverent duet before launching into a fast-paced, rhythmic full-choir proclamation. Later, a soaring soprano solo floats over a steady choral ostinato, leading into a majestic "Gloria Patri" (Otito dịrị Nna) and a triumphant coda declaring that God is the ultimate hero ("Odogwu").
Because of its scale and vocal complexity, choirs typically reserve this piece for special occasions, choral festivals, or as a grand thanksgiving anthem. It requires stamina and precision, but when sung with full energy, it lifts the entire congregation into a spirit of awe and joyful worship.
