Benedixit Deus Noë by Jacques Arcadelt — Lyrics
About Benedixit Deus Noë
Jacques Arcadelt's motet Benedixit Deus Noë for SATB voices opens with a gentle, imitative texture as the voices enter successively, weaving a calm yet purposeful atmosphere. The Latin text, drawn from Genesis, recounts God's blessing of Noah and his descendants. The music beautifully reflects the sense of divine promise and exhortation: 'Increase and multiply, and fill the whole earth.' The second part of the text reiterates this with the establishment of God's covenant, further emphasizing the theme of divine assurance and the potential for human growth and expansion. Arcadelt's setting is both devotional and uplifting, a fine example of Renaissance sacred polyphony.
