About Benedictio mensae. Alio modo
The German words of this motet are a blessing of the table, a prayer for God's grace upon the food and for the diners to receive it with good conscience. The text expresses humility and dependence on God's mercy, asking that the meal be to His praise. Matthieu Le Maistre sets this prayer for four-part choir (SATB) in a style typical of sacred Renaissance polyphony. The intricate vocal lines would have been a common feature of church music from this era, offering a devotional and contemplative experience.
