About Benedicta es caelorum regina
Adrian Willaert's motet Benedicta es caelorum regina is a significant work from the Renaissance sacred repertoire. Scored for SSAATTB, it masterfully employs a rich polyphonic texture to set a Latin Marian antiphon. The text exalts the Virgin Mary as queen of heaven and lady of the world, the medicine of the sick, and the star of the sea. It further elaborates on her divine calling as mother of Christ, her immaculate conception, and her greeting from the angel Gabriel. The motet culminates in a plea for Mary to intercede with her son, asking him to remove our guilt and grant us a prepared kingdom in the heavenly homeland.
