About Benedicite Deum Caeli
These words from the Book of Daniel urge praise for God's heaven-dwelling majesty, commanding that his wonders be told to all who live. The text calls for blessing and singing to him for his mercy towards us, concluding with an Alleluia. Orazio Tarditi sets this jubilant Latin text for two voices (SA). His setting of Benedicite Deum Caeli is a sacred motet, characteristic of the sacred part-music of its era. The composer's skill is evident in his responsive setting of the lyrical exhortation to praise.
