About Beatus vir qui timet Dominum
This motet by Orlando di Lasso sets Psalm 111, a celebration of the righteous man who fears the Lord. The text rejoices in the blessings bestowed upon such a life: prosperity, enduring justice, and the light that shines in darkness. Lasso's setting for four voices (ATTB) brings this message of divine favour and steadfastness to life. The music would have been used as part of Vespers, the evening prayer service, and reflects the rich tradition of sacred polyphony in the Renaissance. The composer's masterful handling of the Latin text ensures that the words of praise and assurance are clearly conveyed through the vocal lines.
