Beata es Maria

Jacob Obrecht’s motet Beata es Maria, for four voices in AATB, sets a Latin text that is a Marian prayer. The music opens with a flowing melodic line, soon joined by the other voices in close imitation. The composer’s masterful control of polyphony is evident throughout, creating rich textures where the individual lines weave together seamlessly. The text, which praises the Virgin Mary as pure, merciful, and blessed, finds eloquent expression in Obrecht’s carefully crafted harmonic language and melodic invention. The motet moves from a devotional focus on Mary to a plea for intercession, incorporating the Kyrie and a section of the Ave Maria.
