About Ave stella matutina
Antoine Brumel’s Ave stella matutina is a sacred motet for four voices (ATTB) in Latin. The text is a Marian antiphon, addressing Mary as the morning star, prince of the world, and queen. It invokes her as a shield against enemies and a symbol of virtue, referencing the Old Testament imagery of Jesse's rod and Aaron's almond blossom. The antiphon also recalls the miracle of Gideon's fleece, asking for solace in this earthly prison. It concludes by praising Mary as the chosen mother of God, asking her to be the straight path to eternal joy, peace, and glory.
