About Ave Regina Coelorum
The beautiful Latin text of this votive antiphon expresses a profound veneration for the Virgin Mary as Queen of Heaven and Lady of the Angels. It calls her the 'holy root' and 'gate' from which Christ brought light to the world, and rejoices in her glorious beauty. The text concludes with a plea for her intercession with Christ for us. Joseph Haydn's setting for SATB choir captures the solemnity and soaring devotion of these ancient words. This sacred motet is ideal for liturgical occasions when the Blessed Virgin Mary is honoured, or as a reflective concert anthem.
