Ave Regina cælorum

Francesco Soriano’s setting of the Marian antiphon Ave Regina cælorum opens with a noble and flowing melodic line, soon joined by the other voices in warm, homophonic texture. The four-part writing for SATB choir is predominantly rich and chordal, creating a devotional atmosphere. The Latin text, a prayer to Mary as Queen of Heaven and Mother of God, is treated with clarity and devotion. Soriano’s music responds sensitively to the words of praise and supplication, particularly in the flowing lines of the Gaude Virgo gloriosa section, before returning to a more stately feel. It is a compelling and devotional motet, suitable for liturgical use or concert programming.
