About Ave maris stella, S. 34
This setting of the Marian antiphon Ave maris stella offers a profound meditation on Mary as the star of the sea, the nurturing Mother of God, and the ever-virgin gate of heaven. The text implores her to change Eve's name, a symbolic plea to reverse the Fall, and asks her to free the guilty, bring light to the blind, and ward off evil. Liszt weaves these petitions into a powerful sacred motet for double choir (SATB and TTBB). The music responds to the text's request for purity and gentleness, culminating in a prayer for a clear life and safe journey, so that all may rejoice in seeing Jesus. The work concludes with a doxology to the Trinity.
