About Ave maris stella (even verses)
This setting of the ancient Marian antiphon Ave maris stella is by Giovanni Matteo Asola. The Latin text addresses Mary as Star of the Sea and Mother of God, a perpetual Virgin and Gate of Heaven. It implores her to undo the work of Eve, grant peace, and bring light to the blind, while asking her to show herself as a mother and accept prayers. The text also pleads for purity and a safe journey through life so that we may rejoice in seeing Jesus. Asola’s music is written for a variety of four-part male and mixed-voice ensembles, offering considerable flexibility for programming.
