Ave Maria … Virgo serena by Josquin des Prez — Lyrics
Ave Maria, Gratia plena,
Dominus tecum, Virgo serena.

Nova replet laetitia.
Ave, cuius Nativitas
Nostra fuit solemnitas,
Ut lucifer lux oriens
Verum solem praeveniens.
Ave pia humilitas,

About Ave Maria … Virgo serena
Josquin des Prez’s Ave Maria … Virgo serena is a sacred motet in Latin, setting a text that expands on the traditional Ave Maria. It begins by addressing the Blessed Virgin Mary, full of grace, and then reflects on key moments in her life: her Conception, Nativity, Annunciation, Purification, and Assumption. Each event is presented as a source of joy and salvation for humankind. The composer’s rich SSATTB setting brings this devotional text to life with intricate polyphony and expressive harmony. Josquin’s mastery is evident in the way the music reflects the serene beauty and profound significance of the words, creating a profound musical meditation on Mary’s role in salvation history.
